From Place to Place

When the world expands, more becomes familiar

A thousand shades of green

flashing by

a gold glow on everything

in sunlit air

An endless horizon

of dipping valleys

and rising hills

of swaying grass

flowers too wild for the backyard

broken tree branches

still and resting on the trunks

they grew on

Sprawling farms and tiny three shop towns

barely living in view long

enough to identify

The hum and growl

of the car engine

sinking into your bones

smiles shared in the rearview mirror

Powerlines and flags

etched, engraved across

the cloudless blue abyss of a sky

Tunnels made of towering, mountainous trees

following carved out rocky mountain sides

Houses tucked amongst the forest

and hidden snug against the hillsides

Old wooden signs with their chipping paint

holding the guarantee of splinters

Fresh faced bridges, all concrete and metal

awkwardly plopped into the greenery

The rocking swoosh that comes with the passing by

of families, and couples, and friends

in their own shiny vehicles

The unnatural scent of air conditioning

the fwub fwub fwub of one open window

The thrill, the anticipation of reaching one’s destination

wrapped up within the quiet

contentment in the journey one takes to reach it.
