A Poem of Hatred and Love

Our story begins

in an average house in an average town

Of a girl's sins

and how she drowned

A letter sat, unopened on her bed

written thoughts put down on impulse

and on the paper she said

something that would never be considered dulse

"In a world where my voice is never heard,

listen up and you will learn.

There is a secret I have kept

from when I was little until now

"In a world where girls can't be themselves

Where they live to marry the man their father picked

I have rebelled

and never have I been happier

"In a world where my romance is scorned

Where my love is despised and ridiculed

I have had many the nights under the sheets

with girls across town who want to experiment

"In a world where I have to hide who I am

I have been exactly what the church calls satanic

Girls climb out my window in the middle of the night

their clothes bundled in a ball under their arms

"In a world where I must change myself to fit the image of a perfect daughter

I raise two fingers in the air

because love is love

and I love who I love."

As the girl's mother used her nimble fingers

to clean the house, like a good wife

the mother's loud gasp lingers

as it sliced through the air like a knife

Her eyes scanned the note

mouth drooped opened like an o

her conscious barely staying afloat

as she slowly slunk back downstairs to sew

The girl came back from school

her mother said nothing

She played the fool

until she could tell her husband about the thing

When the man walked through the door

his wife scrambled to tell him the news

and as she retold the note, his mouth sunk to the floor

his anger blowing a fuse

Marching up the stairs

his hand clenched into a fist

he screamed and screamed with no cares

that the neighbors could hear his threatening hiss

Soon, word got around town

her secrets exposed to the world

Whenever she would walk by, no one would make a sound

their thoughts twisted and curled

Her visits at night became few

since no one wanted to be put into her story

She was labeled the town's shrew

and would soon have to worry

The threats came a week later

anonymous accusations full of hate

known as a traitor

which all but sealed her fate

Down, down, down she went

a spiraling path of depression

She was bruised and she was bent

from all her peer's aggression

Until she couldn't stand it anymore

neck to curtain, curtain to rail

until she was put to a sleep where she couldn't snore

and she would stay that way until her body went stale

Only after she died did people realize what they had done

sent her to grave

when she was far too young

All because of the hate they had gave

Let you take this as a message

for all you readers out there

that people's hate is a presage

on how someone's life will fare

Don't alienate a person because of their love

They are only being true to themselves

They may not fit your hand like glove

but acceptance is one way to better ourselves
