Reborn

I wasn’t always on this side,

I once lived where the light of the sun warmed your skin at the touch,

Where grass grew, and the songs of the wind could be heard in every ear,

But now I am here, living in fear,

In a place where dry bones cannot be awakened,

Where lost things go to die,

I tried to get out once, but it was to no avail.

For I am surely stuck in this place forever,

How did I get here?

A story that is now distorted in my head,

It shouldn’t have been there; it was never there to begin with,

So why now?

Why me?

The world above me was once my home,

But now I’m trapped drowning in a world of despair,

Who knew such a small place could be this cold?

That one step into a pond could succumb me to what lied beneath.

Was this the end?

Or was this the beginning of my transfiguration?

A question that would soon be answered as I slipped deeper and deeper into the now frozen over pond.

My head is telling me that I’m drowning, but with my lungs full of air and my heart at peace,

I try to convince myself that is not the case.

What is this place, and where is the current taking me?

The deeper I go, the warmer the water gets,

And the once deep water is now illuminated by a distant ray of light,

The water is clear, the clearest I’ve ever seen.

And the floor of the pond is now deeper than I feared,

But the light I was seeing seemed to be getting closer and closer.

The once cold waters, are now warm against my skin,

And the once vast body of water is now tightening around me like an outer shell.

It felt as though I was going through some type of tunnel, but to where?

I still did not know,

Although I am now closer to the light, I am now in a tight space.

My body is being squeezed by the walls that now encompasses my body.

I can now hear voices coming from the light,

But can they hear me?

I can’t let out a scream for fear I might drown from still being in the water.

But how much longer will this take?

How much further do I have to go?

Would it be easier to go back?

No, I can’t go back now,

The way back is now as distant as my memory,

And the path is now too dark to see which way to go.

So, I push forward into the tight tunnels,

Lungs still full of air, hopeful for what’s on the other side.

Is it freedom?

Or is it another place like this one?

One can hope it is the latter.

As I keep moving forward, I can now feel the pressures of the tunnel walls,

Pushing against my body as I make my way through.

I must keep moving forward or I will die here, I tell myself,

Fighting against the gravity of the tunnel walls,

I see that my redemption draws near,

As I am now seemingly right in front of the source of light.

I push and swim a few feet closer to my only hope of exiting this labyrinth,

Only to hear more voices on the other side, but this time they are closer,

But I am still unable to make out what they are saying.

Just as I get closer, I see a hand emerge into the water,

As if it knew my position,

As if it knew I was there and needed help.

I quickly grab onto the hand as it starts to rise back to the surface.

The exit is just as tight as the tunnels, but I still push my way through,

Screaming and heavily breathing once finally on the other side.

It hurts but I can breathe again, I am no longer submerged in the water,

But where am I now?

I try to open my eyes but the light blinds me and I scream out in pain,

What is this place?

I hear the voices from before, but they now speak a language I no longer understand,

I try to move but my body no longer possesses the strength as it was all used in the tunnels.

The hand that once helped pulled me out now turns in to thousands touching all over my body.

"What are you doing to me"? I try to scream out,

But no one seems to understand, as I scream out, I know feel my body being moved picked up and laid down in a place unknown.

I scream again, "what are you doing to me"?

But still, no one answered me or seemed to care.

I try to fight the hands that were now all over me, only to be restrained.

I cry out some more, "why are you doing this to me"?

But they simply pick up my now still body and carry me as I wail in tears.

They then place me on a warm matt, that is almost calming to the touch.

Why does this feel so familiar?

And why do I feel so calm?

I stop crying, and finally open my eyes

The blinding light still hurts my eyes but this time I push on to see

As I open them I see I am indeed in an unfamiliar place

But the hands that now hold me makes me feel at home

This was indeed the end of my journey, for I am now…Reborn
