Forever Lagging

Don’t Turn Around

Moving forward

My feet dragging backward

An icy shiver traced my eyebrows

Goosebumps erupt

My nerves feel totally wrecked

Untouchable

Unpredictable

Unexplained

This feeling eludes my grasp

Almost there, but never quite

It's elusive indeed

Like a nightmare that never ends

A new start comes with every dawn

Unexplained

Unpredictable

Untouchable

Overwhelmed by shame

Lord, have mercy

My days are numbered

A sorrowful reminder

Of past glories

Lost in a day

Perhaps not this very moment

Not even at supper

But next week, or the month after

Money will run out

Our table is bare

Our dignity lost

Everything will fall apart

If no good emerges

If I don’t

Take action

One

Two

Three

Four

Five

Six

Seven

Eight

Nine

Ten

There's nothing left to count

My body has moved on

To another dimension

No need for sustenance

A shadow, no longer subject to anyone's will
