Footsteps

A poem

Clean the

blood up again and

remove the tooth marks.

-

Unplug the machine from

your chest, and listen for the

beeping.

-

I flatlined twice in the time

that it took you to

arrive,

-

and I staggered, alone, through

these smoking streets, past all of these

eroding drains and rotting slabs of

concrete.

-

At least the sun was out,

and its warmth tried to hold my

freezing body. I stood alone

beneath it all, breathing it in and

waiting to hear

your footsteps,

never quite

here.
