FLY AWAY, LITTLE BIRD
I found you in the winter,
Your feathers wet with rain,
Your tiny wings were trembling,
Your eyes were filled with pain.
I wrapped you in my kindness,
I kept you safe and warm,
I held you through the darkness,
And sheltered you from storms.
You sang beside my window
As morning touched the sky,
And every little melody
Would lift my spirits high.
I knew that you were healing,
Your wings grew strong once more,
Yet still I kept your golden cage
Beside my bedroom door.
I loved to hear you singing,
I loved you being near,
love should never cage someone
Because of lonely fear.
The sky began to call you,
The clouds all knew your name,
And keeping you imprisoned
Would only bring you pain.
I carried you outside then,
My hands began to shake,
For setting free the one you love
Can make a true heart break.
I slowly turned the small gold key,
The door swung open wide,
You looked at me so tenderly,
Then spread your wings with pride.
Fly away, my little bird,
Go find your open sky,
Do not look back and see these tears
That gather in my eyes.
Go dance among the sunlight,
Go sing above the trees,
Your wings were never given
To live without the breeze.
Perhaps you will remember
The hands that set you free,
And sing outside my window
From some familiar tree.
Fly away, my little bird,
Although my heart must grieve,
Sometimes the deepest kind of love
Is loving one who leaves.
