Fire Eater

A Poem

Embers leaping in your mouth,

scorching your tongue raw

as flames tickle along your esophagus.

You raise it to your lips, seething poison,

sweet, yet oddly alluring

as you watch it descend.

You are a fire eater,

a conqueror of the flames

that have consumed so many before you.

The crowd sits in awe, eyes burning as they watch

as nature's destructive hand descends upon you

and you swallow it whole.

The staff comes out empty,

for you have trapped the fire

deep within yourself,

where it rages still,

extinguished, but not dead.
