Finding Home

A poem

What is home? Where is home? Who is home?

I live in a distant land with my loneliness

And hence I am forever alone.

A place where the wind and weather speak to me

And try to calm my anxious mind down

Only to find out home is a zone

Where my heart can call something as its own.

Home is when my mother cooks during festivities

Father brings back home small gifts and goodies

Sisters chatting up about life all night

And the younger generation playing with gadgets in plain sight

A place with good food and talk

Or going out with family for a nice walk

Where the kitchen is the core of every household

Sometimes better than the living room

Where we take decisions of becoming a stronghold.

Home can be as small as a heart

It is seldom, as people prefer houses with bigger backyards

Home can be a roadside shabby looking shed

Or a luxurious mansion with bigger than life sized beds

Don’t live in either but in my little corner

No, I am not complaining as I am just a foreigner.

Home can be anyone you love

Someone who comes first and is always above

Finding peace in moments of laughter

Surrounded in safety with love, warmth and care

Does home look the same for all?

Or just an illusion that is meant to stall

There are always two sides to a coin

And I ask you to see the other side to adjoin.

Millions are driven out of their homes everyday

No food or safety promised and forced to walk away

Losing a sense of time and space

Facing brutal realities in a state of disgrace

Arriving in a land of a different culture and language

And packing their old lives in a small baggage

They restart their lives to feel welcome

In a foreign land where home is not the same again.

They adjust and try to be a part of the new society

Putting lifestyle changes as a top priority

Often the winds of change arrive with important decisions

To make a living and live life with a proper vision.

Meaning of home changes from one form to another

Like before, walls don’t always echo sounds of laughter

Backyards and mansions were never an option

Finding solace in homemade coffee becomes a solution.

Home is therefore a feeling we carry within ourselves

Replacing bricks are foundations of strong emotions

Home is therefore where the heart will be

I don’t live in a home but it lives within me..”
