Finally Free

She walked out with me

Finally Free

I learned to quiet every sound,
to measure every word,
to watch the way the silence changed
before a single word was heard.

I learned to read the smallest signs,
the footsteps in the hall,
to make myself as small as I could
and still be there at all.

I gave away my voice for peace,
my wants became too small.
I thought if I could just behave,
perhaps you’d change it all.

But love should never feel like fear,
or make you beg to breathe.
And one day through the tears and pain,
I found the strength to leave.

I left with nothing but my scars,
my children by my side.
I didn’t know what waited next,
but knew we had to try.

And now the mornings sound so strange—
there’s laughter in the air.
I make their breakfast, sing and dance,
and no one’s angry there.

No one tells me I’m doing wrong.
No one makes me choose.
No one turns a simple day
into something I must lose.

I still have days I flinch and freeze,
still moments filled with doubt.
Sometimes my heart forgets that peace
is what I’m living now.

But every day I choose my voice.
Each breath belongs to me.
I don’t need permission anymore
to simply laugh or be.

My children get to watch me smile,
to grow without that fear.
They’ll learn that love can feel like home,
that safety can be here.

And maybe freedom isn’t found
the moment that you flee.
Maybe it’s the quiet, little things
that slowly set you free.

The music playing in the kitchen.
The laughter down the hall.
The mornings when my children cry
and no one blames us all.

The freedom to say what I think.
The freedom to say no.
The freedom to make a simple choice
and never have to know

if someone’s anger waits for me
when I walk through the door.

I thought I had to find someone new.

Instead—

I found the woman I was before.

And she was waiting patiently,
beneath the fear and pain,
beneath the years I thought I’d lost,
beneath the pouring rain.

She hadn’t disappeared at all.
She’d only learned to hide.

And when I finally walked away,
she walked out by my side.

Now I don’t look behind me
to see who’s following me.

I just look at the life ahead—

and breathe.

Finally free.
