Fear Behind

Getting away

He's there

I hear him breathing

Passed out on the couch

If he awakens

If he catches me,

I'll pay dearly

.

I gently touch my bruised arms

Inspecting where he dug in

As he shook me

He wanted his beer ice cold

I tried to explain

The fridge stopped

I touch my face

Where he slapped

.

I was afraid to leave

Now, I am more frightened to stay

Just a backpack

With one change of clothes

And money I stole from his wallet

More to atone for

Should I be caught

.

I slowly turn the door handle

I hear him shift

Hold my breath

Not looking back

I hear as he settles

Gently, I pull the door open

.

Door left ajar

Still not looking back,

I run.

He may follow

My heart races

My breath comes in ragged gasps

My vision blurs

As tears fall

Fear?

Relief?

Both

The monster behind me

Can chill his own fucking beer.
