Father Time

A poem

It’s been ten years now

Since last I saw your face

-

I wonder if I’d recognise it now,

Or pass you at our meeting place

Unaware.

-

I thought of writing you some letters,

All the drafts still in my drawer.

A sense of loss for that which lives,

The thoughts forever gnawing.

-

Not pain, more like discomfort

A lack of knowledge of my history

No role models, but

Also no more empty bottles

And no more fits of rage

Over weekends that we

spent in your domain.

-

Vague images now remain,

Stubble scratching my young face,

Snores heard from the hallway,

Chairs thrown and loud thuds.

No longer stumbling across

Drugs or being held close by

Drunk,

apologetic hugs.

-

The mundane activities,

Groans in traffic

Or unwrapping CD plastic

Now so magnified.

-

No idea how time has

Been to one another

Brain moves on but

Divides are felt still now,

Like any other.

-

My pale body grows like yours,

I see more you than me in mirrors

And the fact I don’t know you

Anymore,

Always leaves my head

Spinning.
