My oldest is an artist. I still have some things she drew when she was young tucked away in various drawers. When I show them to her she says "Oh, that's awful, don't show me that. I've gotten so much better." I reply: "But that's wonderful that you've gotten so much better. I'm so proud and happy to watch you grow."
