False Allies

The people who say they are my allies

Stole my voice

They buried it in the sand

Watched it drift away with the rising tide

Said they’d speak for me while offering a hand

While I died inside, because I wanted to take a stand

//

They paint their faces green

Awareness signs in hand

Take pictures for their newsfeed, making sure others understand

Forge a new identity based on us as charity

Smile at me and then speak for me

Because they know what’s best

I can’t ever know what’s best

//

They praise the man on their tv screen

He mocks people like me, but they say they haven’t seen

Replace their face paint with red hats for the weekend

Talk about him like he’s an old friend

I speak up about the hurt and the smiles turn to anger

Blocked, forgotten, left behind, I became a stranger
