Fall

A poem

The images still vivid,

fading skylines

-

like my body,

dissolving,

-

present before you

but I’m just not there,

-

every moment

passing,

not quite felt.

-

My past life, its warmth,

slips through my tired fingers,

-

falls, cascades,

down into depths

-

I dare not study.

-

Frozen in stone, the distance

growing,

-

hollow conversations,

destinations unknown.

-

The universe is crumbling,

but neither one of us has noticed,

-

swallowed up by potent pains

that tie us, shackled, to the present.

-

Everything is crumbling,

but we can’t tell,

-

and even when we do,

we put no more

-

than a small plaster

over the widening cracks.

-

My body, dissolving,

before your frozen eyes.

-

An outstretched hand,

rejected,

-

wallowing,

while elsewhere

-

buildings

fall,

great monuments

turning

to nothing.
