Facing Your Fear

Don't run, turn around

By Matthew BathamPublished 4 months ago Updated 4 months ago 1 min read

I know I’m dreaming

But I keep running

Knowing it's behind me

.

I pelt through hotel corridors

Along dark roads

Its footsteps always close

.

Sometimes I can fly

But I know this time

It will be like swimming up through sludge

.

I’ll feel its breath soon

Cold on my bare neck

Maybe a whisper

.

Turn and face it!

.

That’s what I’ve been told

When a monster chases you in a dream

Face it, and you’ll discover your fear

.

I’m running down

My childhood street now

Through gloomy streetlamp light

.

I’m a boy again

Wearing shorts and a bright t-shirt

Cheap trainers pound the pavement

.

Turn around and face it!

.

And so I do

My childhood self turns and sees

Me as I am now

I’m what I always feared I’d be
