Eyes Forward

Don't turn Around- challenge entry

The road in front is long and gray

I fix my eyes ahead

Ignoring every heavy word

the past has ever said

🩶

A prickle crawls across my skin

a whisper in the air

"Don't tell a soul I told you this"

but I won't turn to stare

🩶

It follows like a haunting ghost

an itch I must not scratch

The weight of secrets left behind

the shaking of a latch

🩶

I feel the moisture of a breath

the 'but' that trails the line

It tries to latch into my skin

and claim the space that's mine

🩶

The footsteps loud behind my back

an echo sharp and thin

It wants the door to swing back wide

to let the gossip in

🩶

But I have built a powerful wall

a line within the dust

I leave the "who" and "what" behind

and trade them for my trust

🩶

The presence lingers in the cold

just inches from my heel

The less I give it room to breathe

the less it starts to feel

🩶

I keep my pace. I keep my peace

The monsters try to climb

but I stay walking toward the light

one boundary at a time

🩶
