Existential Cage

a villanelle

Pablo Picasso - Guernica

The human being’s a prisoner, harassed.

Always fighting, yearning to be free.

Freedom’s fleeting and always going fast.

Battling the shackles of the past.

Think of freedom, sing your quiet plea,

Grab it now or it will not last.

Believing that you can outlast

Society’s dominant decree,

Freedom’s fleeting and always going fast.

Always tired, feeling so outcast,

Wanting to fly, but freedom’s the one to flee.

Grab it before you know it will not last.

The freedom’s there, look at it, aghast.

Snatch, grab, grip it, that’s the key!

Freedom’s fleeting and always going fast.

But it escaped, the moment now has passed,

You close your eyes count one, two, three,

Freedom’s fleeting and always going fast,

Grab it now or it will not last.
