every night past six

a poem

every night past six

it was just a taste of amber

at every night past six.

her smell was strong and lingered

across his violent lips.

.

and he would drag me from my slumber

by my tiny wrist,

as amber smoked my lungs,

then burned with every hit.

.

and I wondered what she gave him

that stole so much from me.

was that poison so much better

than the love I tried to be?

.

oh, daddy was my safety,

really so easy to sell?

for amber’s sweet relief

on your journey down to hell.
