Every Inch a King

Borne of the blooded and subdued

He runs the gauntlet of history’s trail,

Pouncing on the enemies of his youth,

An arrow borne from the mighty unicorn,

And notched with the venom of an adder’s tooth.

**

He skirts the water of the great lagoon,

Where later he’ll fish for the mythical eel,

In an endeavour to gain the strength of its skin,

For boots that’ll mould onto his feet to seal.

**

The hunt is on for any of his tribes miscreants,

For a warrior king doesn’t allow fear to rule,

He strives for the gratitude of his people,

And abolishes those that act the fool.

**

At heart he is made up of a kitten’s meow,

But only a few bear witness to such an event,

Most see him as a fierce lion’s roar,

At an alluring seductive sniff of his scent.

**

He roams the valleys of every inch of his land,

Searching for those that hide under the rocks,

The outcasts of the future of unholy deeds,

In which he dreams of abandoning such blocks.

**

Tomorrow is for love, peace and harmony,

He strives for reconciliation and the wanton emotions,

The darkest hours are made for loving and romance,

Especially with those that hold his heart’s devotions.

**

Reflections wash through his dreams in his slumber,

Signalling the effort he still needs to obtain,

A busy day or two follows on the horizon,

While his body grows stronger from all he sustain.

**

Random feelings attack his beaten heart,

Reminding him to take care in amongst the bloody battle,

Pounded with anxiousness over his historical losses,

He now obsesses over protecting his chattel.

**

He rides at dawn searching for the wicked,

Wearing his lion’s mane and instilling his wolf’s heart,

Be prepared to meet death on the edge of the precipice,

Because he won’t stop searching until he’s torn you apart.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
