Even as Adults

A Poem

when we were young

we were taught simple truths

two plus two equals four

red and blue make purple

the alphabet begins with a

and perhaps the most important

he that smelt it dealt it

we were taught other things as well

we were taught to treat people

how we wanted to be treated

and that a person is a person

no matter how small

And then we grew up.

two plus two still equals four

the alphabet still begins with a

and people?

they're still blaming their farts on other people

but growing up has brought about a change

it's no longer easy to treat people kindly

when they are rude to us

and though the rule still applies

we like to believe that our revenge is justified

because we are generally good people

or because

they deserved it

see even as adults

we're still just a bunch of children

making believe

that we're heroes in the world

we're play acting

like we're justified

but that's the catch isn't it

Is it play acting if we honestly think it's real?
