Echoes in an Empty Room

prompt 6/23/2025

By Ellie HoovsPublished about a year ago • 1 min read

My cries reverberate off of crown molding

the dentil white of it grinning.

My shadow is laughing at me,

dancing on tip toes to the silence of "told you so".

Red flags fly at half mast.

I wish I could burn them in protest!

But the room is empty, and darker for it.

A type of homelessness that wraps me in homesick.

Happy facades are hung in galleries

lining a somber gray hall.

I can't decide if the lies look sharper

in black and white, or in color.

A mourning dove calls to me from the dogwood tree.

She brings a song of peace,

and stays by my window, drinking my tears,

as I sleep.
