Echo & Echo &

A Poem

By Abdullah khanPublished 3 months ago 1 min read

I was used and used all my life,

by Zeus, by the other nymphs swimming in the pond,

and Hera, in her beautiful rage, took away my only strength,

No more stories, no more tales,

only this

echo

echo.

-

I walk to my favourite pond, the one where nymphs are said to play,

but not a creature insight,

only me,

and my beautiful reflection, reminding me of my worth.

I wail out in loneliness,

"Oh! Will I ever find another as beautiful as me?!"

Me!

I turn, but not a soul emerges from the wood,

to embrace me as their lover.

I wail once more,

"Oh! Let us meet. Let us come together!"

Together!

A sign from Zeus or the nymphs from their ponds

echoes triumphant through the forest.

Finally, a lover for poor Narcissus.

I run through the bush, the trees, the weeds,

but with each turn, each passing hour,

only madness greets me.

"Show yourself, cruel lover!"

Lover!

"Come, I am over here!"

Over here!

"Please do not run! I've been alone all my life. Do not go away!"

Go away!

How could she?

Show could she greet me with only this

echo

echo?

"I will convince you of my love, or else I will throw myself in your pond and drown!"

"Drown!"

Narcissus, meeting only fate,

did not bother to hold his fine breath and

threw his beautiful body into the pond and

from Oread's feet, her tears sprang life to beautiful flowers and

the woods went silent

leaving only this

echo

echo.
