The earth, our mother,
Gorgeous both by itself and
Improved by people.
Life-giving water,
Plentiful, renewable,
scarce at the same time.
The rock, stone, or clay
Is every living thing's base
and stability.

The air we breathe moves
and connects all elements
into one system.

Earth's our only home.
We do not have Planet B.

Author's note: This series of haiku was inspired by the massive wall-size paintings of the earth, water and rocks by Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas (1906–1994) that I saw at the National Gallery in Athens. He was a prominent Greek painter, sculptor, engraver, and writer, recognized as a leader of modernism and cubism in Greece. Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas blended European avant-garde styles with Greek landscapes and light, creating a distinctive post-cubist style. He was also an academic, teaching at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Here is more information about this impressively talented artist:
