Peace and Quiet

There is a baby who cries so loud

That her mother can never sleep

A baby who won't, past due date, allow

Mother's wits about her, to keep

.

The days crawl on, with nary an end

The lacrimation is flagellation

And the nights for her, all tend to blend

In aimless somnambulation

.

If only mothers who hoped to be proudest

Could lie-in with baby now known

No! A loss confirmed, the painfully loudest,

Is the baby who ne'er came home
