How to Stop Pushing What Isn’t Yours to Move

Let go of your attachments; stop pushing a stone that doesn't belong to you.

We often try desperately to move an enormous stone—one inscribed with past regrets, the arrangements of fate, the opinions of others, and even the lives of others.

We naively believe that as long as we try hard enough and persevere, we can change these things. But the result is often that we end up battered and exhausted, while the stone remains completely unmoved.

"There are many things you cannot change, yet you keep wasting your energy on them—that is the biggest problem." True internal conflict does not stem from the difficulty of a situation itself, but from our excessive attachment to the "uncontrollable." You are spending your most precious life energy on things destined to be futile.

How do you stop this drain? You need to start practicing "energy decluttering":

Draw your "circle of control" and "circle of concern": Take out a piece of paper and write down everything that makes you anxious. Carefully distinguish between what you can fully control (your behavior, your mindset, what you need to do today) and what you cannot control (other people's emotions, past events, future variables). For the things you cannot control, practice saying, "What does it matter to me?" or "Let it be."

Set aside half an hour each day for focused thinking: Don't spend all day immersed in anxiety. Set aside a specific block of time (e.g., half an hour after dinner) specifically to reflect on the things that bother you, focusing on how they can help you grow. Once the time is up, stop immediately and move on to something else.

Focus your energy on small actions that bring progress: Instead of fantasizing about rewriting your destiny, read five more pages, exercise for fifteen more minutes, or get a good night's sleep tonight. These small, controllable actions are the real path out of your predicament.

Remember: "Let go of your attachment to the uncontrollable, and save your energy for things that build you up—you deserve a better reality." Take your hands back; stop pushing the stone. Use those hands to embrace yourself and create a future that truly belongs to you.
