Drink a slice of lock fish

A wacky story about the oddities of language

Isn’t it strange? It’s odd to think

That you can’t eat an eat,

But you can drink a drink.

And often, I want to disagree

That you can plant a plant,

Yet can’t tree a tree.

However, I’ve known for quite a while

That you can laugh a laugh

And can smile a smile.

Still, there are times when I’ll check twice

That you can’t cake a cake,

But you can slice a slice.

And sometimes, I find it quite absurd

That a fly can fly,

Yet a bird can’t bird.

But here’s a thing I learned by chance:

That you can jump a jump

And can dance a dance.

Although it doesn’t feel quite right

That you can’t dark a dark,

But you can light a light.

Indeed, we also mustn’t ignore

That you can lock a lock,

Yet can’t door a door.

I almost forgot one other thing:

That you can run a run

And can swing a swing.

Of course, this really is just the start.

You can verb many nouns if you’re smart.

You can fish a fish.

And pat a Pat,

But beware, she mightn’t like that.

You can phone a phone

And bump a bump,

But it might hurt more and grow a lump.

You can tie a tie

And cook a cook,

But if you do that, you’ll be a crook.

You can film a film

And wave a wave,

But when saying goodbye, try to be brave.

And finally, news to warn about.

Please be careful and watch out.

When you’re running low on luck,

You might just have to duck a duck!

Echoes the spirit of Dr. Seuss for me. Enjoyed the playfulness of this poem. Will you be creating more in the future?
