Save the Children

As I walk through our streets, I am left in despair.

For, sickness and death hang heavily in the air.

Our children are dying from hunger and disease.

Their mothers weep because their child’s pain they can’t ease.

For there is nothing so sad as a starving child’s cries

Or seeing the emptiness in little hollow eyes.

These children are the future, and they are crying out in need.

So, if there’s to be hope for tomorrow, today we must heed.

For our nation has a great enemy, and Poverty is its name.

But if we let it take our children, it is ourselves we must blame.

The Bag Lady

She waddles along with her bag and cart.

She makes digging through trash look like an art.

She’s the little old bag lady who travels this street.

She searches for treasures and something to eat.

But tell me, “Who is she? What is her name?

What is her story? Is life to blame?”

She’s one of the lost ones who fell through the crack.

Now the world has forgotten her, and she can’t find her way back.
