A Poem

These dreams play out in my mind while I sleep,

floating colors go by,
and I try to blend in with them
like a chameleon.

I am floating in the sky,
but it wakes me up with a start...
though I fall right back to slumber
and the dreaming skies turn
a shade of burnt umber.

Are the nightmares settling in now?
What will unfold in my mind's eye?

Oh, the way our wakeful lives
play with those visions we see in repose ...
and who knows what they are really trying to tell us?

Is there a message
in the gray rainbow
across the blood red sky?

Are my dreams telling me I am going to die,
or just reminding me
I have so much more life to live.

Oh, what I would give
to remember them all...
every moment that plays like a movie
on the screen of my dreams.

What stories I could write...
and, of course, interpretation
could be the guiding light
to fix whatever mistakes I made
that creep into my thoughts at night.
