Dreams of the future

a villanelle of regret

By Suzsi MandevillePublished 10 months ago 1 min read

The dreams of the future are birthed in the past.

Fly away. Fly away! Like migrating birds.

Dreams come and gone. Their time didn't last.

Dreams come and gone. Their times didn't last.

Old and grey. Cold and aged. Too late I learn

That dreams of the future were birthed in the past.

Those dreams of the future were birthed in the past.

Young and strong. Strong and young. Caution unheard.

Dreams come and gone! Those times didn't last.

Dreams come and gone; that time didn't last.

Letting go, letting go, 'til it's all gone away.

The dreams of the future were birthed in the past.

The dreams of the future, once birthed in the past,

now hazy, I'm crazy! There's no-one to tell that

the dreams came and went. The times didn't last.

No past and no future. There's only today.

Like migrating birds, they've all flown away.

The dreams came, now gone. Their time didn't last.

The dreams of the future now dead in the past.
