Dragon's Lament

Sorrowful Creatures

A full moon shines unimpeded, each blade of grass illuminated in a silvery glow. All is quiet and still, until a single clear voice rings forth. The trees shiver and soon a haunting melody strikes up, the beautiful chords make the forest come alive as the notes flow from one to another. The ancient oaks creak and groan as their great trunks and branches sway with the risings and fallings of the melody. Their leaves caress each other and cause a shushing sound as if a gale has pushed and prodded at their bases. The ethereal song picks up in tempo as the eleven singers allow their own emotions to seep into their tune. Many animals rush through in a wild frenzy; they respond to the call for their mates. This song is sung each moon to help the forest and its inhabitants to flourish. It is, however, very fatal to human ears.

Off in the very distant mountains, a fierce black dragon, upon hearing the melody, roars in anguish and fury. He is the last of his winged brethren, and is harshly reminded of that unholy fact through this eleven rite. He curses and thrashes his tail with fury at those interfering mongols. The music forces him to still search, however futile, it is the way of their magic. He flat out refuses to search tonight, this decision is a product of his rage. Shivers rack down his spine and he hunkers low to the ground, wings tucked in tightly, to keep from jumping into the skies for the search. He quakes, and quivers in helpless agony on the forest floor.

A deer bounds over the dragon’s foreleg, in such a heedless hurry, it failed to notice the predator. Unfortunately for the deer, because the dragon snaps spitefully at the stag. Blood gushes and spurts in great astounding arcs, however his mood lightens not. He mournfully howls his afflicting torment at the unresponsive sky. The music descends into another verse, one perhaps more melancholy sounding.
