downpour 🌧️

a little poem about rain, contemplation, depression, and hope

By angela hepworthPublished about a year ago • Updated about a year ago • 2 min read

I still kick rocks when the world seems golden

Dragging my feet when the road clears

Backtracking to where I’ve gotten lost before

Waiting for the crowd to go home

For the skies to cloud over again

Darkening my path like dusk

This cloudiness is a comfortable ease

A familiar ache in my bones

One foot in front of the other

I persist through the precipitation of my life

The mud makes a home of my footprints

As I mark my place in the earth

Wobbling and warbling like a newborn

Under the glow of the springtime sun

Peeking out skittishly behind a sinister sky

March comes in like a lion every year

Rainwater sliding down the slick of my coat

Trickling to the ground like runoff

I am cold and soaked and spinning

Grey raincloud right above me

Marking me as I make my way home

Lingering above and around and beside

Head down, boots on

I’ll seek out something vibrant

Like drops of rain on the pretty green grass

So that I can see and know

I’d miss this if I was gone

Rainy days mean something more

Than inconvenience and gloom

They make me feel the way I’m meant to

In the best way I can feel it

Contemplative and helpless and alive

Stuck in thought in a place no one can hear

Too distracted by wetness and wind

To see the ways in which the brain can whirr

For better or for worse

Acceptance is a futile sort of sway

A gust through the dripping trees

Yet it happens all the same

For when it rains

I never wish for nicer, better days

Disposition is a funny thing

How we want the world to bend to us

To look how we feel

When it rains this way in the spring

Contentment fills my every thought

Even when the days aren’t happy

And the weather doesn’t impress

If I can walk through the mud

Boots on and headphones in

Blaring a sad, forlorn song in my ears

At a volume that would make others cringe

I might see something I’ll never forget

A woman in a dress with sandals on

Rainwater flecking her white toes

The white blur of a plane high in the air

Whisking hundreds of people far away

Round-eyed children watching the clouds

Hoping to see a lightning bolt

Or a dog barking to come into the house

And bask in a warm, dry comfort

I might just see something

That reminds me

Not all of me belongs here

Under the hue of a grayscale world

Downpour is not permanence

For springtime is coming to a close now

And murky skies don’t last forever
