Don’t Understand Why She Holds On

Written in 1994 but recently discovered while cleaning files from a computer. A poem about a person who thought being treated harshly was a sign of love.

I can't understand,

why someone would hold on

to another

like she does.

He treated her like crap.

Made her feel like dirt.

He ignored all her

invitations.

Broke off all their dates.

Yet, she proclaimed him to be

the one she loved best.

She gave him everything

she had to offer.

Love was her highest honor.

In return, he walked away.

Still, he was the sunshine

that shone brightly in her day.

He lied to her

with smokes screens

always there.

And didn't care.

Because he

could get away

with it all.

She blamed herself

for all his mistakes.

She blamed herself

for not grasping

his affairs.

She blamed herself

for everything

that one could bare.

He finally put an end to it,

his highest form of respect

he could give her.

She cried and asked "why, oh why

Did someone so dear leave me high and dry?"

At least it's over.

And she has time to heal.

But it makes me wonder

will all of her future affairs

compare to this blunder?
