I hear a voice
It's from inside my head
The soft whisper
Don't Turn Around
I can feel my lungs freeze
I choke as if I am out of breath
I hear another soft whisper
Don't Turn Around
I swallow the lump still stuck in my throat
I close my eyes
Then hear another soft whisper
Don't Turn Around
I take a step into the light
And then another trying to escape what is behind me
And then the whisper gets louder
Don't Turn Around
I begin to walk faster
Then I sprint into a run
The whisper gets even louder
Don't Turn Around
It was a new day
A new dawn
I felt as if I had emerged from a cocoon
A deep fog lifted
A slumber after a long winter ending
Now awoke
Awake and Dreaming
I hear the slightest whisper in the wind
Don't turn around
The sun is shining brighter than I have ever seen
I'm filled with a new essence
I feel alive, I feel free
The birds begin to sing
I look around and see flowers in bloom
It took a lot to get my mind to breakaway
And out of all the gloom
I hear my ancestors from above
Don't turn around
Then I begin to feel that horrible feeling once more
My chest pounds harder
My breath becomes shallow
My stomach a little weaker
The paranoia begins to set in
The doubts within my mind rushing in like waves crashing against the rocks on the shoreline
The fear overwhelms me
My mind screams
DON'T TURN AROUND
My eyes open once again just as the day breaks dawn
I'm blessed another day not to be 6 ft underneath the ground
My mind begins to hum a familiar reggae tune
I often listen to when I get the blues
And a little voice inside my head says
Don’t turn around
I drift away throughout the day
My destination is unknown
I try to find strength in this mediocre life
Not a moment that comes soon
And again I am reminded by that little voice inside my head
I repeat it back once more to myself underneath my breath
Don't Turn Around
Day turns to night I feel it watching me from afar
Slowly creeping in the shadows the darkness is on the prowl
Waiting to consume me and pull me from the light
Again that voice tries to reassure me
DON'T Turn Around
I close my eyes tight
Muster all my strength
I've always tried to out run it
But it always caught up to me in the past
I trip and stumble to the ground
I can feel it drawing closer and closer
I fear it's almost near
I begin to turn my head
Then stop
That little voice inside growing louder every year
A hush falls down and all around me
I take a deep look inside myself
And all I seem to hear
DON'T TURN AROUND... YOU NO LONGER LIVE THERE!!!
