Don't Speak
A poem about learning how to live in color.
It is troubling, innate patterns present;
the wish to be a Good Girl encouraged
by nurtured behaviors of much adored
authority, threatened by one unbound.
“Children should remain unheard. I said so!”
Difficulties silenced effectively;
intimidated into conformity.
Vicarious beliefs of love untrue
demand unquestioned adoration
to fulfill expectations of greedy
acceptance; until cumbersome cliche's
turn childhood vivaciousness black and white.
Curious questions sparkled bright in those
beautifully speckled brownish green eyes.
Gradually, reticently she grew
recovering a voice of veracious
authenticity, empowered by gold
saturation; inspired by her own vox,
she emerged from rigid, pallid honor
into flourishing chromatic passion.
