Don’t look at the sun
Do not look at the sun too long,
It is not made for mortal sight,
What feels so pure can still be wrong,
What shines too strong can steal your light.
We lift our faces to the blaze,
As if all brightness must be true,
We stand there lost within its gaze,
And let it burn us through and through.
There is a danger in the glow,
A hidden edge in all that gleams,
A silent harm we rarely know,
When blinded by our hopeful dreams.
You think the fire will make you whole,
You think the heat will make you strong,
But some flames swallow up the soul,
And leave you where you don’t belong.
The world is full of shining lies,
That call your name and draw you near,
They dress themselves in perfect skies,
While hiding all that you should fear.
And still we stand, and still we stare,
Ignoring every warning sign,
As if the pain is somehow fair,
As if the loss is somehow fine.
But when the darkness floods your view,
And all you see is empty space,
You’ll wish you turned when you once knew,
Not every light deserves your face.
So guard your sight, be still, be wise,
Turn when the warning starts to rise,
For even beauty in the skies,
Can leave you blind before you realise.
