Doing Time

Living in a Cell

By C. D. GuzmanPublished 25 days ago 1 min read

It's wild in here, worse than they say. The shadows long, the light fades away. Told I'd be sentenced, judged as an adult for the weapon I used, for the violent assault.

Here I am, just a boy in this place. While other teens drive I face disgrace. Their lives are just starting, new doors open wide. While I prepare for prison, with nowhere to hide.

As they get their licenses, taste freedom's breath. I'm staring down years in a cell, a slow march to death. Thinking of twenty-six the age I'll next see breaks my young heart, takes all hope from me.

The weight of the years, the burden of time. For a moment of rage, for a single crime. A future once bright, now dimmed by despair, a decade of lost youth, too heavy to bear.

It's wild in here, the tales understated. Reality harsher, my dreams decimated. I was just a teen, caught in a storm. Now facing a sentence that’s become the norm.

As friends find their freedom, explore the unknown. I'll be behind bars, cold and alone. Their joy, their laughter, a distant, faint sound. As I count the years in this life I've been bound.

Thinking of twenty-six, my spirit feels torn. All the years wasted, the youth I will mourn. I can't grasp the future, it's too far away. The life that I'll miss, the price I must pay.

In this place, it's wild, but worse than they say. A young heart breaks as it’s sent far away. From the dreams of a boy to the fears of a man. Facing ten years, in this dark, endless span.
