Relationship arithmetic

There was a time

When you, plus me

Equaled one -

A mathematical incongruence

Which somehow the two of us

Didn’t see.

*

We were oblivious to rules.

Yes, we were odd,

We were quirky,

But we were inseparable, attached,

Happy with our oneness.

*

Then came another.

Unwilling to play the part of a third wheel,

The two of us plus one

Was a minus to me.

You two went on your way,

But you couldn't add up without me.

*

You came crawling to my door,

Wanting to reestablish our oneness.

But, by then,

I saw you as nothing...

With tears, that meant

You, divided from me,

Left zero.
