He made no confession.
He escaped alive,
only by a miracle.
Moved
by the tears and entreaties
of the taciturn youth.
On his way
to lifelong banishment.
The people,
by whom he was idolized,
Laugh,
at the presumption
of his noble frame.
To the insane
passions of martyrs,
He belonged.
feasting their eyes
on his scarcely-healed scars.
Gratified.
Enabled.
to meet suffering
with a smiling face.
Shall we not see him
covered with shame?
Languishing in confinement.
a good citizen,
Possessed.
not only of a great mind.
Tired, of its capricious fanaticism.
