dinner with an apostle

by Katarina Tyler

By Katarina TylerPublished about a year ago 1 min read

Saint John the apostle is eating my leftovers at my dinner table

and I remember my mom told me she thinks of me often

and prays for me each day

and I suppose maybe

I have been throwing my pearls to pigs

‘Did my mom send you?’

He looks up from my coconut chickpea curry

and shakes his head ‘no’

‘Is that my red wine?’

So I guess God sent me Saint John, the disciple whom Jesus loved

and I’m looking at his dirty sandals

and his slender brown feet and

I’m really wishing he would have sent

Esther

or Mary

or someone interesting like Queen Jezebel or King David

but I sit down anyway because I remember when

my mom told me she thinks of me often

and prays for me each day

and I suppose maybe

dinner with an apostle would be okay
