I am not just a statistic,

a disorder you won’t say,

I am autistic.

I’m not some cutesy term to help you sleep at night,

I’m not differently abled or special needs.

I’m autistic, get it right.

The gears may turn differently in my brain,

but they work as well as yours.

I may be racing on a different track but we are the same train.

I am a spectrum of being,

I hum the songs you cannot hear,

I see things you aren’t used to seeing.

I flap my hands like a butterfly in flight,

I twist and turn to the music in my soul,

and dance in the warmth of my own firelight.
