Desert Life
Between LA and Las Vegas. The wasteland actually thrives in this hot, dusty place.
I.
Stopped for a moment
on the edge
of a dry lake bed.
II.
The hustle and bustle
of Vegas is ahead,
and L.A is in the
Rear-view mirror.
III.
Here,
not a soul dwells.
IV.
The animals
take shelter
in their holes
as the sun
bakes the hardened
ground.
IV.
Only a breeze
(that becomes a
torrent)
invades this place.
V.
Cars can't talk
from Interstate 15.
VI.
The train's too far
to hear it beat the
tracks.
VII.
It's quiet here
to a point in which
it hurts your ears.
VIII.
Yet you can think
and you can hear
your mind speak.
IX.
As quiet as it is,
so full of life it is.
X.
The dust devil rides
the thermals
twisting, turning,
churning up brown dust
and sending them
to heaven.
XI.
The chaparrals and sage
sway lightly to
the wind's desert song.
XII.
Here, nature keeps going,
paying no heed to
humankind.
XIII.
It has the space,
vastness,
majesty,
and quiet strength
to proclaim itself
untouched and off-limits.
XIV.
Little changes here,
and that's fine,
for it helps one forget
how complicated
human life
really is.
