Deeper Than the Surface
Something There Lurks
It wasn't you, baby girl, she didn't trust
It was the world around you
She knew somehow
They would try to drown you
Your heart was good, a brightness unlike any other
One she knew they would only try to smother
For theirs were calloused, evil, full of shame
And they would target you to take their blame
She feared the way your heart would break
After all she knew they would try to take
You always thought she was being too serious
Not understanding she was speaking from experience
She herself had been broken, drained, and bruised
Having to learn to rebuild again from the pieces they used
The ones they took, smashed, and left damaged
She picked them all up and still somehow managed
From the way they treated her, she knew
They would do everything they could to hurt you, too
Your beauty, your whole being, all of your soul
Was a great magnificence to behold
Your smile, your laughter, and even when you cried
Were all the more reason she always tried
To keep the savages with their fists at bay
That she knew would be coming your way
You see, it wasn't you she didn't trust, baby girl
It wasn't you; it was the rest of the world.
