Deep Seated Agony

Carried in her soul forever

She awakens to the constant pain deep within her soul,

The one carried through past lives and rebirth,

She’s tried passing it to her next in line,

But rediscovers it as soon as she recognises Earth.

***

It’s a pain buried deep within her psyche,

No matter how often she attempts to ignore it and outrun,

Some days a dull ache,

Others as vibrating as a dozen set of drums.

***

There’s not a place she can out-feel this terrible sensation,

From the tip of both little toes,

To the pit of her empty churning stomach,

And even through her pert tiny nose.

***

Season after season,

Storm after storm,

It flows through her veins,

Forgoing all her attempts to transform.

***

Her nightmares remind her while she sleeps,

Then the worst of it is when she wakes,

The destruction of her anticipated hope,

Opening her eyes for that first second is all it takes.

***

She feels it’s a cancerous growth buried ever so deeply,

An accumulation of living within her choices,

Past, present and future,

Playing over and over in an assortment of different voices.

***

Do you know how she can find her escape,

Even if it’s just a second or two,

She’s totally out of ideas,

As she’s tried every single point of view?

***

She dreams of the end,

The disappearance of the white noise,

Blissful silence,

Until that sudden return, fracturing the peace it destroys.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
