Suspended in stygian brine
Disorientation
Total absence of
Directional indications
Indecision paralyzes
No sound or
Motion inviting my frantic eyes
kicking, spinning, searching
For any signs of life
Spotted
What I take to
Be lantern light
Bobbing
Growing
I swim with all my might
A cloud of translucent
Gelatinous flesh
Tentacles jet past me at
Breakneck pace
The light continues
Toward me to drift
I stroke with a hitherto
Unfound strength
The light looms
A glowing haze
Realization dawns
Too late
Jaws are closing all around
Like a fish on a line
Drawn into the angler’s maw
