decomposing as an art

about the abandoned

soggy cereal clumps together in ceremonious bonding

rusty veins reach out grasping at gasping-for-water pipes and attention-seeking creaky door hinges

badly potted plants are powder-ized

there is a rot growing

it thrives, attaching itself to once loved and lived memories

like that one crooked kitchen cabinet that never shut properly

or the smudge on the window that only got worse the more rubbed at it

or even the spiderweb-like cracks in the corner of the downstairs bathroom mirror

everything means nothing and everything, at the same time

a reflection of a life loved and lived and forgotten

like the sunken porch steps that bared the weight of holiday gatherings

and a time before video games took over outdoor childhood shouting

but now cables lay hazardous and split

like tooth decay and nail clippings that never grow back

there is no revival to revel in, nor rebirth to look forward to

everything that ever was, has now ended

come to a standstill, a pause, a moment of-

except for the mold

and the rust

and the weeds growing tall out back, they don't care for time
