DEATH CAME KNOCKING AT MIDNIGHT
Silently sly and quietly

DEATH CAME KNOCKING AT MIDNIGHT
Death came knocking at midnight,
With moonlight in his hair,
He stood beneath my porchlight,
As though he belonged there.
His coat was made from shadows,
His eyes were strangely kind,
He said, “I’m looking for someone,
Who’s always on your mind.”
I asked if he had come for me,
He slowly shook his head,
“I came to bring a message,
From someone who is dead.”
He opened up his pale white hand,
A small light rested there,
It carried your old laughter,
And the scent you used to wear.
I heard you whisper softly,
“Please wipe away your tears,
I never really left you,
I walked beside you years.”
“You never seen my footsteps,
Or heard me call your name,
But every time you thought of me,
I felt your heart the same.”
Death placed the light inside my chest,
It warmed me like the sun,
He said, “Love does not finish,
When earthly life is done.”
I asked him where you lived now,
He pointed to the skies,
Then pointed at my beating heart,
And looked into my eyes.
He turned towards the darkness,
And vanished through the gate,
But just before he disappeared,
He said, “Love knows how to wait.”
Now midnight doesn’t frighten me,
Nor shadows on the wall,
For death is just a messenger,
And love survives it all.
