Dearly departed

Baggage at the terminal

The airport is the best place to cry.
No one asks,
No one soothes.

Strangers don’t gawk —
Just nod in understanding,
Story forming in their mind.

“She just said goodbye
to someone she loves,”
They comfort themselves,

“She’s lucky to feel that.
It’s not goodbye forever.
Bittersweet, not tragic.”

Relieved of obligation
By such rosy assumptions,
They politely avert their gaze.

You can shuffle through security,
Openly grieving.
No need to explain.
