Fourth of a Grateful Sonnet Quartet

Begin by walking, then run like a stag

Tread water, then surge through the stream: salmon

Flap, then find the wings of dragons a drag

Be, then try other ways of being on

Read, then write for a reader you envy

Love, then warm and shatter every heart

Think, then make the darkest puzzle easy

Touch, then weave silk finer than any art

Speak, then orchestrate dialogue divine

Listen, then fill ears with honeyed music

Argue, then crush wars to make ruby wine

Remember, then wear an ancient tunic

Slip your corporeal bonds—imagine

Of words, make infinite, fresh forms—slip in

Sonnet
