Dear Mother

What can I do for you? How do I help your heart rest easy when I go outside? How do I reassure you I won't go missing tonight? I can't keep a promise when others restrict me in unforeseen ways, but do you know what keeps me clean in those moments?

The days you did my hair as you spoke to, comforted, sang to, kissed, and hugged me made me feel I was already in the safest place. But, you know what, Mom? Any hiding spot, jail cell, or safe room, the only safe place is you, so while others may restrict me, ill make it home tonight so I can hug you tight.
