Days in Hell

Poem of Gulf War 1991

To my brothers in arms

Burning fires into the leaden skies.

It smells as if someone dies.

I wipe away the blackened grease,

will there be no peace?

Shifting sands upon my feet,

I quicken my pace as I dream of my love to behold her beauty once more.

All this despair of this cursed land drives me to sorrow.

Time is all I borrow to pass this hell of the story I will tell.

I look into a million mile stare, the Abyss to all I miss.

What will I behold to my heart of such a place?

The burning shell of what was once my soul.

Did he too love as I do?

Did he hold and comfort a child as I have?

Who is worthy of such a hell!

Can you tell by looking deep inside, the pain I revile?

All those years and no tears.

Who do I tell…

I’ve come undone.
